DUSHANBE. May 26. “Asia-Plus” — On June 3 this year the Union of Journalists of Tajikistan (UJT) is planning to conduct a roundtable on the results of a survey of legal, moral and esthetic causes of attraction of Tajik media to legal liability.

The project is supported by the Internews Network in Tajikistan and represents the second phase of the project on systematic survey of legal and moral principles of activity of the Tajik media focused on the study and analysis of legal and ethic violations, identification and professional discussion of basic gaps in normative basis of media activity, Executive Secretary of the union Pulod Nurov told the AP.

“In the course of one-month first stage independent media experts have studied and presented competent legal and moral characteristics of substantial side of the Tajik media, evaluated general legal violations and misuse of pluralism principles, professional standards and moral liabilities which can be found in the activity of printed and electronic media communications,” Nurov has said. “Researchers believe that identification and listing of the most typical violations of the media of legal and ethic character which may become potential reasons for legal liability will let journalists to improve their professional practice, skills and use legal means to protect their interests.”

According to him, the survey covered more than 30 printed and electronic media of the republic, including independent editions and TV and radio channels which were brought to court in the past year.

The survey covered and analyzed three main aspects of the media activity: legal analysis of media publications, moral and ethic evaluation of the media, study of public opinion and international resonance in case of attraction of the media to legal liability.

“Roundtable participants are planning to discuss the validity of specialized control over and monitoring of printed and electronic media in terms of observation of laws and ethic code,” the source stressed. The project provides for publication of a brochure that will include the results of the survey, reports and presentations and, which is more important, systematized presentation of the most typical legal and moral violations and mistakes which have related legal and moral consequences.

Roundtable will bring together heads of central and regional media, representatives of media organizations of Tajikistan, international organizations and diplomats accredited in Tajikistan.
