QURGHON TEPPA, July 30, Asia-Plus — Fifteen participants of the 2010 Roof of the World Rally arrived in Qurghon Teppa, the capital of Khatlon province Thursday evening.
Among them are nationals of Great Britain, Ireland, Germany and Russia. The 2010 Rally began in London on July 3 this year.
On the way to Tajikistan, they have conducted various actions to raise funds for international non-governmental organization, SWORDE-Teppa, working in Qurghon Teppa. “I cannot yet name the exact amount we have managed to raise during the rally, but I think it is a considerable amount of money,” the rally organizer Ryan Walker said, noting that it was the third Roof of the World Rally.
The SWORDE-Teppa representative noted the rally participants also donated an ambulance to the central hospital in Qurghon Teppa.
SWORDE-Teppa is an international development organization specializing in sustainable development projects in Tajikistan. SWORDE-Teppa supports local kindergartens, orphanages, schools, universities and the local community by implementing and supporting diverse projects. These are linked together to reduce poverty and lead to a healthier and more fulfilled life for all the community. Its projects include specialist training and other activities relating to health, sport and leisure, IT, scientific research on conservation and environmental issues and much more.
We will recall that His Royal Highness The Duke of York, or Prince Andrew, as he is also known, opened the new building of the SWORDE-Teppa Center in Qurghon Teppa in July 2006.
The Roof of The World Rally is an adventurous charity rally. The Roof of the World Rally has been called arguably the most eccentric rally, due to its ”droll mission of promoting the drinking of tea across the globe.” The Roof of The World Rally is organized by Go Help, a UK registered charity run primarily by volunteers. The very first Roof of the World Rally was launched in 2008 from Greenwich Park Tea Pavilion. There were 3 teams representing UK, Australia and Italy all of which raised funds for SWORDE-Teppa in Tajikistan. 2 of the teams completed the Rally. In 2009 The Rally organizers gave the Rally more structure by joining the non-profit Charity Rallies group. 8 teams launched from Greenwich Park Tea Pavilion and all 8 teams managed to complete the rally.
