DUSHANBE, September 29, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Iranian company, Saber International, has been granted a contract for implementation of the third phase of the Shagon-Zighar road rehabilitation project, the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) director Ismonqul Shoqulov said in an interview with Asia-Plus.

“Saber International has implemented the 2nd phase of the project and it will start the third phase in the near future,” Shoqulov said.

The Shagon-Zighar road rehabilitation project – phase III is designed for two years and includes reconstruction of the 18.5-kiloneter section of the road.  A total cost of the project is 20 million U.S. dollars.  A loan agreement between the Government of Tajikistan and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) was signed at the beginning of this year.

The second phase of the project was finished in late January this year.  The warranty period for this section of the road is one year.

In all, some 35 million U.S. dollars have been allocated fro the second and third phases of the project that stipulate reconstruction of the section from Guldara to Zighar.  87 percent of this amount have been provided by IsDB and the remaining 13 percent have been provided by the Tajik government.

Some 15.9 million U.S. dollars have been allocated for implementation of the Shagon-Zighar road rehabilitation project – phase II that was launched in November 2008.

The first phase of the project was finished in 2005 already and five-kilometer section of the Shagon-Zighar road was reconstructed during the first phase.

The Shagon-Zighar road is a section of the Dushanbe-Kulob-Khorog-Murgab-Kulma highway that leads to Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region in China and also gives access to Karakoram Highway (KKH) that provides links to Pakistan”s seaports.
