KHUJAND, November 17, 2010, Asia-Plus  — An alleged activist of the banned religious extremist Hizb ut-Tahrir organization has been detained in Khujand, according to the Sughd police directorate.

“The 32-yer-old resident of the city of Istaravshan, Dilshod Mukhtorov, who has two previous convictions for theft and robbery, was detained in Khujand on November 16 on suspicion of being member of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization,” said the source at the Sughd police directorate, “Two copies of the Hizb ut-Tahrir book “Nizomi Islom” (Islamic Order) were confiscated from him.  Besides, when searching Mukhtorov’s house, police officers found 11 subversive books as well as five CDs and four leaflets of the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization.”

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against Dilshod Mukhtorov under the provisions of three articles of Tajikistan’s Penal Code: Article 187 – organizing a criminal group; Article 189 – inciting racial, national, ethnic, or religious enmity; and Article 307 – calls for forcible change to or overthrow of the constitutional order of Tajikistan.  An investigation is under way.
