DUSHANBE, may 7, 2011, Asia-Plus — Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi met with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Representative for Central Asia Armen Harutyunyan here on May 6.
According to the Tajik MFA information department, cooperation between Tajikistan and OHCHR was the focus of the meeting.
Mr. Harutyunyan reportedly informed Zarifi of the results of his meetings with senior representatives from the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Court, Tajik civil society and Tajik Ombudsman Zarif Alizoda.
In the course of the talks, the two considered specific directions of mutual cooperation aimed at supporting Tajik government’s efforts to ensure supremacy of law and carry out democratic reforms, the source said.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is a United Nations agency that works to promote and protect the human rights that are guaranteed under international law and stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948. The office was established by the UN General Assembly on December 20 1993 in the wake of the 1993 World Conference on Human Rights. The office is headed by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, who coordinates human rights activities throughout the UN System and supervises the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
