DUSHANBE, May 13, 2011, Asia-Plus  — Officers from the Drug Control Agency (DCA) under the President of Tajikistan have reportedly seized a large consignment of MDMA tablets, also known as ecstasy.

The DCA press center reports 34-year-old Tajik citizen was arrested on May 12 on suspicion of having involved in drug pushing.  “When searching apartment he rented in Dushanbe, the drug control officers found five packages containing some 500 tablets that tested positive to MDMA,” the source said.

According to the preliminary information, the detainee purchased the MDMA tablets from an Afghan national for the purpose of selling them at 20.00-30.00 U.S. dollar per one tablet, the source added.

MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine) – colloquially known as ecstasy, often abbreviated “E” or “X” – is an entactogenic drug of the phenethylamine and amphetamine class of drugs.  MDMA can induce euphoria, a sense of intimacy with others, and diminished anxiety.

MDMA is criminalized in most countries under the United Nations agreement, and its possession, manufacture, or sale may result in criminal prosecution.
