DUSHANBE, July 27, 2011, Asia-Plus — A mild tremor measuring 2.0 on a 12-point scale jolted Dushanbe today morning, at 8:16 am, according to the Geophysics Service at the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan.

Centered on Afghan territory some 250 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe, the earthquake could be felt in some other regions of Tajikistan as well.  No injured or damage was reported, according to the source

The tremor’s magnitude at the epicenter was 3.0 on the Richter scale.

It is already the third earthquake registered in the region over the past several days.

A powerful quake hit the region in the early morning hours of July 20.  In Tajikistan, according to the Committee for Emergency Situations (CES), one person was killed and at least four others injured in that earthquake.  The death was reported in the northern city of Khujand, the capital of Sughd province.  A 43-year-old resident of Khujand Abdullojon Askarov became victim of the tremor.  He was building a private house and he stayed overnight at the half-finished house.  Askarov apparently jumped out of the second-floor window to escape the quake.  He died of injuries he sustained.  At least four other residents of Khujand were injured in the quake.  They also jumped out of windows to escape the quake.

In Uzbekistan, according to figures provided by the country”s Emergency Situations Ministry, at least 13 people were killed and 86 injured in the July 20 earthquake.

Earthquakes are frequent in Central Asia, a strategic and mineral-rich region of mountain and steppe between Afghanistan, Iran, Russia and China.
