DUSHANBE, May 16, 2013, Asia-Plus — 16 officers from Custom Service Department of the city and regions are attending the national training on international shipment of strategic goods, according to the Delegation of the European Union to Tajikistan.

Organized by the Border Management Program in Central Asia (BOMCA), funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, together with the International Center for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), the four-day training session kicked off on May 16.

Two trainers from the European Union are providing to the mid-level operational staff of Customs Service an overview of the concept of strategic goods, transit regimes, and various aspects of strategic export control, current international legislative framework and regulations.  Through the presentations on existing transit procedures, the trainers will share their knowledge and experience on transit risks and the ways to mitigate them.

The practical purpose of the training is to assist participants in understanding the relationships between customs procedures and import/export/transit processes and the international framework regulating the shipment of strategic products and transit regimes.

The overall objectives of BOMCA are to help increase security in the Central Asian region, to contribute toward the facilitation of legitimate trade and transit, and to reduce the illicit movement of goods and people.

The BOMCA Program is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP, with ICMPD as an implementing partner for training component.
