DUSHANBE, July 8, 2013, Asia-Plus — The Government of Japan within the agenda of the Grant Assistance for the Grass–roots Human Security Projects (GGP) will support the development of agrarian sector in Khorog, the capital of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) through rehabilitation of irrigation canal and provision of necessary equipment.

According to Japan’s embassy in Dushanbe, Mr. Hiroyuki Imahashi, Ambassador, Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe and Mr. Qodir Qosim, Governor of GBAO on July 6 signed a grant contract for “The Project for Improvement of Irrigation Canal in Khorog City.”  A total amount of the project is 112,154 USD.

The irrigation canal named after Dodikhudo was built in 1947 for the 15 households who lived on the left bank of Shokhdara River in Khorog.  Nowadays with the growth of population, more than 1,000 households live in that area and the demand for irrigation water exceeded the capacity of water supply of this canal.  Also because of avalanches and landslides for long time, the canal was severely deteriorated and accumulation of mud and stone worsened the drainage system.

With the implementation of this project, Dodikhudo irrigation canal will be rehabilitated and expanded and 14,000 people will have access to sufficient water.  Besides, the GBAO land reclamation and water resources department will be provided with an excavator that will enable to remove mud from the drainage canal and ensure constant cleansing of the canal in future.

Upgrading the agrarian sector will assuredly improve the economic conditions and ensure basic human rights of local people in Khorog city of GBAO region.  The government of Japan is committed to support Tajikistan to take the necessary measures to ensure the basic human rights and the betterment of people’s life.

Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGP) is provided to local governments, educational/ medical institutions and NGOs in developing countries.  GGP supports projects in the human security sectors at the grassroots level. Since 1996, GGP has extended more than US$ 23.3 million for 302 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan.
