DUSHANBE, August 16, 2013, Asia-Plus – On Thursday August 15, Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi met her with Lord Waverley, Chairman of the British All-Party Central Asia Parliamentary Group.

According to the Tajik MFA information department, the two discussed a number of issues related to bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Kingdom and expressed readiness for further expansion of cooperation in various areas.

They also exchanged views on a number of international and regional issues being of mutual interest, including the current situation in Afghanistan, the source said.

Lord Waverley is an independent member of the House of Lords, he entered Parliament in 1993.  He has contributed regularly to Parliamentary proceedings on a wide range of topics, covering drugs, terrorism, conflict and development, and travels widely including to Afghanistan and Colombia, and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Guinea and the countries of Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

Lord Waverly chairs the All-Party Central Asia Parliamentary Group and the country groups of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan; a position held since the foundation of the Groups.  He is also co-Chair of the British Mongolia Parliamentary Group. His objective has been to put into place relationship mechanisms between the Parliaments in order to address a missing link in bilateral relations and to bring greater understanding of the strategic importance of Central Asia.  Lord Waverley has initiated co-operation agreements with each of the Parliaments of Central Asia and Mongolia in recognition of the desire to strengthen Parliamentary cooperation and being committed to political, economic and social understanding and development.
