DUSHANBE, September 12, 2013, Asia-Plus – Analysis of food waste impact on the environment, particularly on climate, water and land resources, and biodiversity is held in the new UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report – Food Wastage Footprint: Impact on Natural Resources.

Report authors argue that 1.3 billion tons of food produced in the world is transformed into food waste. Annual economic damage from food losses is $750 billion.

“Food waste has huge consequences for food stability,” José Graziano da Silva. “If we lower the losses, we will not need to produce more food and spend natural resources on it.”

Total amount of water used for wasted food production is comparable to the annual flow of Volga River, and is the source of 3.3 Giga-tons of greenhouse gases.

According to FAO information, 54 percent of world food waste is thrown at production, harvest, and storage stages. 46 percent is lost during processing, marketing, and consumption.
