DUSHANBE, October 25, 2013, Asia-Plus — Hosted by the Parliament of Montenegro, the 2013 Autumn Meeting was held on October 13-15.  More than 200 parliamentarians from across the OSCE area gathered for the meeting in Budva, which included a Mediterranean Forum, a meeting of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (PA)”s Standing Committee, a meeting of the Bureau, and three sessions of the Parliamentary Conference “Addressing Transnational Threats and Protecting Human Rights: The Role of the OSCE.”

According to the OSCE Office in Tajikistan, Tajik delegation actively participated in discussion of issues related to addressing security threats in the OSCE region.

Tajik MP Olim Salimzoda, who is Chairman of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament), addressed Session One entitled “Countering Terrorism and Transnational Threats in the OSCE Area and Respecting Human Rights.”

Speaking at the session, Tajik MP reportedly noted expansion and strengthening of a social basis of political power in Afghanistan is possible through a wide use of traditional institutions and norms, intensification of activity of intelligentsia, clerics, youth, media, and constructive dialogue between all sessions of civil society.

Olim Salimzoda called on the OSCE PA and other inter-parliamentary organizations to play more active role in countering terrorism, in particular through a law-making work in the field of violence prevention.

Session One was also addressed by Alexey Lyzhenkov, Coordinator of Activities to Address Transnational Threats (OSCE Secretariat); Nikolai Kovalyev (Russian Federation); Omurbek Tekebayev (Kyrgyzstan); and Mohammad Alam Ezedyar from the Afghanistan National Assembly.
