DUSHANBE, November 2, 2013, Asia-Plus — Tajikistan has acknowledged reckless driving by children of the country”s elite has been responsible for deadly traffic accidents, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service reports.
In a statement issued on November 1 to mark the start of the “Safe City” campaign in Dushanbe, the presidential press service said that 850 CCTV cameras installed around the city will monitor the streets to prevent, among other violations, “deadly accidents [involving] the children of officials, state workers, and rich citizens.”
The statement comes three weeks after three people were killed in a crash in Dushanbe during nighttime car races.
The children of the country”s elite are known to often participate in these races.
The 16-year-old son of Amonulloh Hukumov, the chief of the Tajik state railway company was reportedly involved in the fatal accident.
The youth, who is recovering in hospital from injuries he sustained in the incident, is a relative of President Emomali Rahmon.
