DUSHANBE, February 10, 2014, Asia-Plus — 18,336 crimes were reported in Tajikistan last year, which is 10.5 percent more than during 2012 and nearly 48 percent more than in 2009, Tajik Prosecutor General Sherkhon Salimzoda announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on February 7.

Despite the fact that the number of the reported crimes has increased in the country, Tajikistan remains one of the most safest countries within the CIS area, Tajik chief prosecutor noted.

An offense rate, or crime rate, defines as the number of offenses per 100,000 population, and in Tajikistan, the crime rate is 215 crimes per 100,000 population, which is several times lower than in other CIS nations, Salimzoda said.

In 2013, 567 suicide cases were reported in Tajikistan, 37 cases fewer than in 2012,” Tajik chief prosecutor said.

According to him, law enforcement officers committed 298 crimes last year.
