DUSHANBE, May 30, 2014, Asia-Plus – A senior representatives from the counternarcotics agencies of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan met here on May 29, according to the press center of the Tajik Drug Control Agency (DCA).

Representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) all participated in the meeting that was held within the framework of the UNODC Regional Program for Afghanistan and Neighboring Countries for 2011-2014.

The main objective of the meeting was reportedly in preparing materials aimed at raising efficiency of cooperation between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan in combating drug trafficking and strengthening border management.

This package of documents is expected to be submitted for consideration to a meeting of top drug control officials of the three countries that is being held in Dushanbe on May 30, 2014.  The meeting will result in singing of a joint protocol, the source said. 

We will recall that high-level government ministers from Afghanistan and neighboring countries launched a regional UNODC program for 2011- 2014 to boost coordinated counter-narcotics efforts and regional stability on December 7, 2011.  The launch followed the International Conference on Afghanistan held in the German city of Bonn to set the future course for Afghanistan after the 2014 handover of power to the Afghan Government.  The Regional Program is a strategic framework for the work of UNODC and multilateral partners and focuses largely on counter-narcotics and the rule of law in order to respond effectively to drug trafficking and organized crime.
