DUSHANBE, June 13, 2014, Asia-Plus — The Tax Committee under the Government of Tajikistan reportedly says the Islamic Revival Party (IRP) must pay a 14,000 somoni fine.

According to IRP’s headquarters in Dushanbe, the head of the IRP’s primary organization in the Shouroobod district was summoned to the local tax inspectorate on June 12 where a warning letter was handed over to him.

Under this warning letter, the IRP’s primary organization must pay a 12,000 somoni fine for the failure to be registered with the tax inspectorate.  Besides, a 2,000 somoni fine was imposed on the head of the IRP’s primary organization in Shouroobod.   

We will recall that Kulob tax authorities closed the IRP’s office in Kulob on June 9.    

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is

Najot

(Salvation).  The IRP now has more than 41,000 members.  It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections.  The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.  Current chairman of the IRP is Muhiddin Kabiri.

According to some sources, women now constitute more than 51 percent of the Islamic Revival Party members.
