DUSHANBE, November 13, 2015, Asia-Plus – One-on-one meeting that was held between Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on November 12 was followed by a delegation level meeting and Tajikistan and Pakistan signed eight cooperation agreements.
The Tajik president’s official website reports that speaking at the delegation level meeting, President Rahmon noted yesterday that expansion of bilateral cooperation with Pakistan is one of priorities of Tajikistan’s foreign policy.
In the course of the negotiations, the two sides reportedly exchanged views on bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of investment, commerce, energy, defense, as well as culture and science.
A direct air communication is expected to be launched in the near futures between Tajikistan and the Pakistani cities of Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad and Quetta.
Construction of highways and rail links connecting the two countries, participation of Pakistan in implementation of energy projects and investment in Tajikistan’s industrial sector were outline das priorities of cooperation between the two countries.
Two sides reportedly also declared for joint fight against terrorism and extremism.
The negotiations ended with signing of eight new cooperation documents. Ministers of respective ministers signed the documents along their Pakistani counterparts.
Tajikistan and Pakistan, in particular, signed an agreement on extradition. They also signed a memorandum on cooperation between the foreign ministries, a government-to-government agreement on cooperation in the field of energy, a memorandum to expand cooperation in the field of industry, and an agreement between the chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries on the establishment of a joint entrepreneurs’ council.
The two countries also signed the program of cooperation between the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research at the Ministry of Science and Technology of Pakistan on use of medication plants for production of medicines. They also signed the program of scientific cooperation between the Academy of Sciences of Tajikistan and the Pakistan Historical Museum.
