DUSHANBE, December 9, 2015, Asia-Plus – Tajik President Emomali Rahmon today held a meeting to discuss issues of removal of effects of a strong earthquake that hit the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) on December 7.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, Prime Minister Qohir Rasoulzoda reported on the damage caused to Gorno Badakhshan by the earthquake and urgent measures taken by the government to remove the quake effects.

237 residential buildings have been destroyed completely and 588 residential buildings have been damaged partially in Gorno Badakhshan, the prime minister said.

In the Rushan district alone, 214 residential buildings have been destroyed completely and 205 other houses have been damaged partially.

Besides, many social facilities such as schools, libraries and others have been destroyed completely or damaged partially by the earthquake.

The quake reportedly caused rockfalls that blocked the Dushanbe-Khorog highway in several places.  All the main and rural roads will be cleared within three days, the prime minister said.

Local authorities of Gorno Badakhshan were instructed to determine safe places for construction of new residential buildings for the quake-affected people.

The president reportedly ordered relevant bodies to make stocks of food products, fuels and other relief materials for Gorno Badakhshan.
