In the months to come, law enforcement authorities of Tajikistan may be required to inform family members of individuals detained on suspicion of having perpetrated a crime of the latter’s arrest.

Such amendments to the republican law “Concerning Suspected and Accused Persons Detention Procedure and Conditions” have been proposed by Tajikistan’s government.

As the lower chamber MP Mavluda Qalandarzoda, deputy head of the parliamentary committee on legislation and human rights, informed “Asia-Plus”, these amendments would introduce the obligation for law enforcement officers to include the name and surname of the specific officer who carried out the arrest in the detention record. “In addition, the detention record would imperatively specify which one of detainee’s family members had been informed of the relevant arrest and of the exact time that the arrest had taken place” – noted the MP.

Qalandarzoda equally emphasized that the proposed amendments aim to both improve the protection of the rights of those individuals suspected of a having committed a criminal offence and increase the sense of responsibility of those law enforcement officers, who carry out arrests of citizens on various grounds.
