DUSHANBE, July 21, 2016, Asia-Plus – Dushanbe Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev yesterday received visiting Governor of Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Valery Shantsev.

According to the Dushanbe mayor’s office, the two discussed issues related to state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Dushanbe and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast.

Dushanbe mayor, in particular, said that the Dushanbe municipal government was successfully collaborating with GAZ Group holding (Russian automotive manufacturer).

Shantsev, for his part, noted that joint ventures would be launched in Dushanbe under his patronage as governor of Nizhny Novgorod oblast.

The two sides reportedly agreed to sign an agreement between Dushanbe Municipal Government and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast on economic and cultural cooperation.  A joint working group will be set up for preparing the mentioned agreement.

Ubaidulloyev and Shantsev also discussed issues of protection of rights of Tajik labor migrants, allocation of quota for Tajik students for studying at higher educational institutions in Nizhny Novgorod, and provision of Russian-language schools in Dushanbe with teachers and textbooks.

Nizhny Novgorod governor invited Dushanbe mayor to pay visit to Nizhny Novgorod oblast at any tie convenient for him, the source said.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast) with a population of 3,310,597 (2010 Census).  Its administrative center is the city of Nizhny Novgorod, which is the fifth-largest city in Russia.

Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is not rich in natural resources, which are limited to commercial deposits of sand (including titanium-zirconium sands), clay, gypsum, peat, mineral salt, and timber.

The oblast ranks seventh in Russia in industrial output.  Processing industries predominate in the local economy.  More than 650 industrial companies employ nearly 700,000 people, or 62% of the workforce involved in material production. Industry generates 83% of the regional GDP and accounts for 89% of all material expenditures.  The leading sectors are engineering and metalworking, followed by chemical and petrochemical industries and forestry, woodworking, and paper industries.  The first three sectors account for about 75% of all industrial production.
