KHUJAND, August 10, 2016, Asia-Plus — A short film “Kosa” by young Tajik filmmaker Muhiddin Muzaffar will be showcased at the 12th Kazan International Festival of Muslim Cinema (KIFMC) that will take place in the capital of Russia’s Tatarstan Republic in September this year.

“60 nominees from 33 countries of the world will participate in the 12th Kazan International Festival of Muslim Cinema (KIFMC) that will take place from September 5-11 this year,” Diloshoub Orifzoda, producer of the Sughdsinamo Film Studio, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

The festival organizing has reportedly received more than 700 participation applications from 50 countries.

The geography of the registered potential participants of Kazan cinema forum is large; the countries, leading according to the number of applications are Iran and Russia.  A great number of films were sent from Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq and Syria.  Many films were sent from Europe.  The first time in the history of the festival the film from Chili and Lithuania were sent to organizing committee.  Russia is presented by several regions, Bashkortostan, Yakutia and Tatarstan among them.

The geography of the festival will be determined by the selecting committee, which is traditionally headed by the film critic Sergei Lavrentiyev.  The jury includes representatives from Russian and Iranian cinematography, CIS countries and Europe.

Apart from competition program there will be a wide variety of non-competition and parallel programs awaiting the audience.  Also traditional programs of European films and collections of short films are planned.

The Kazan International Festival of Muslim Cinema (KIFMC) was created in 2005.  It takes place at the beginning of September in the city Kazan, Russia.

Initially it was supposed to be a mobile festival between Muslim regions in Russia and other States of the Muslim world, and the city of Kazan was chosen to be a start point, because it is the biggest Islamic city in the northern hemisphere.

The President of the Republic of Tatarstan (an autonomous republic within the Russian Federation) insisted that KIFMC should be the Culture Brand of the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, which became the permanent residence for the festival, and city name has been added to the name of the festival.
