The upper chamber of the Tajik Parliament approved amendments to the criminal code of the Republic of Tajikistan, according to which was introduced a criminal liability for public insult of the Leader of the nation and defamation in his address.

The upper chamber of the Parliament of Tajikistan on the 8th of November approved the amendments to the criminal code (CC) of the country about the amenability for public insult of the Leader of the nation and defamation in his address. The leader of the nation is the current President of the country Emomali Rahmon.

As noted the head of the Executive office of the President, a member of the upper house Ozoda Rahmon, article 137 approx. 1, providing for criminal liability for public insult or slander against the founder of the peace and national unity, the Leader of the nation was added to the criminal code. This article also provides for liability for the same acts committed through the press, other media or the Internet.

The person, accused in this article, would face up to five years of imprisonment.
