Amendments are expected to be made to the Constitutional Law “On the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO).”  The amendments are reportedly initiated by GBAO governor Shodikhon Jamshed, who is also member of Tajikistan upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament, and a group of deputies of the lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament.

The head of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Committee on State Construction and Local Government, Abdurahim Kholiqzoda, says the amendments just provide for replacing some words with synonyms.

“Besides, the term “Basic Law” will be removed from the law,” Kholiqzoda added.

The preamble to the law says that the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, being compound and indivisible part of the Republic of Tajikistan, has special geographical conditions, unique cultural, cultural and language values. This constitutional Law regulates powers of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region in social, economic, cultural spheres and other powers of area according to the Constitution of the Republic of Tajikistan.

The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, also known as Gorno Badakhshan, is an autonomous region in southeastern Tajikistan.  Located in the Pamir Mountains, it makes up 45% of the land area of the country but only 3% of its population.

Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region was created in January 1925. It was attached to Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic after the republic's creation in 1929.
