The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) is expected to introduce a new batch of coins in denomination of 1, 3 and 5 somoni as well as 10, 20 and 50 diram into circulation this year.

The NBT has explained its decision to introduce a new batch of coins into circulation by the need to meet the demand for small coins, keep cash in good condition and improve money turnover in the country.

The new coins will be minted at the Mint of the National Bank of Kazakhstan, according to the NBT press center.

Recall, Tajik central bank introduced coins in denomination of 1, 3 and 5 somoni into circulation last year.

The NBT first deputy head, Jamoliddin Nouraliyev, told reporters in Dushanbe on July 24, 2017 that banknotes in denomination of 1, 3 and 5 somoni are most in demand, and therefore, they are becoming dilapidated quickly.

“Therefore, we have decided to replace all banknotes in denomination of 1, 3 and 5 somoni with coins of the same denomination,” Nouraliyev noted.

The NBT deputy head noted that 343 million somoni of dilapidated banknotes, including 41.9 million somoni in banknotes of 1 somoni denomination, 10.7 million somoni in banknotes of 3 somoni denomination and 13.7 million somoni in banknotes of 5 somoni denomination had been immobilized over the first six months of the last year.
