Afghanistan has appointed the first femal ambassador to the United States.

Afghan media reports say Ms. Roya Rahmani, who had previously served as Afghanistan Ambassador to Indonesia, was appointed Afghanistan Ambassador to the United States replacing Dr. Hamdullah Mohib, who resigned from his position nearly three months ago and assumed charge as National Security Adviser, according to 1TVNews, an Afghan privately owned commercial television channel.

“Roya Rahmani is one of the talented diplomats of Afghanistan, who had achievements during her service in Indonesia.  She has been appointed as Afghanistan’s new ambassador to US and will begin working there soon,” Haroon Chakhansoori, a spokesman for Afghan president, was quoted as saying by 1TVNews.

In the meantime, Khaama Press says reports indicate that President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani had earlier proposed his senior adviser for UN affairs Farkhunda Zahra Naderi to assume charge as the new Ambassador of Afghanistan in United States.

However, the offer was reportedly rejected by Naderi who announced her resignation as senior presidential adviser in Kabul on November 24.

It is to be noted that Ms. Roya Rahmani is not the only female ambassador of Afghanistan.  In November 2015, Ms. Shukria Barakzai, who had previously been a member of the Lower House of Parliament or Wolesi Jirga, was appointed Afghanistan’s Ambassador to Norway.
