President Emomali Rahmon has congratulated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on his landslide victory in presidential elections.  Rahmon called Kassym-Jomart Tokayev yesterday night, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

Tajik leader wished Kassym-Jomart Tokayev “success and fruitful activities in this responsible government post.”

In the course of the conversation, Rahmon and Tokayev reportedly exchanged views on state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation and strategic partnership between Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

Early presidential elections were held in Kazakhstan on June 9, 2019 following the resignation of long-term President Nursultan Nazarbayev.  Seven candidates were registered to participate in the elections, including Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who became president three months before the elections following the resignation of Nazarbayev.

The country’s central election commission reported a turnout of 77.4 percent and exit polls show that incumbent President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has won the presidential election by a landslide of some 70% of the votes.

The President of Kazakhstan is elected using the two-round system; if no candidate receives a majority of the vote in the first round, a second round is held between the top two candidates
