President Emomali Rahmon yesterday received Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, who was in Dushanbe on a working visit, according to the Tajik president’s official website.  

In the course talks, the parties reportedly discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan, the process of reestablishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan as well as a number of regional and international issues being of mutual interest.  

Emomali Rahmon, in particular, noted that the situation in neighboring Afghanistan and expansion of bilateral collaboration between Tajikistan and Afghanistan are constantly in the center of his attention.  

“Tajikistan supports the Afghan government's aspirations to establish security, peace and stability in the country.  Dushanbe welcomes the inter-Afghan negotiations that are taking place to this end,” Rahmon said.  

While discussing the issues of providing regional security, the parties noted the importance of strengthening and expanding cooperation in addressing modern challenges and threats, including terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and organized transnational crime, the Tajik president’s official website said.  

Emomali Rahmon reportedly stressed that Tajikistan, using all the opportunities and existing potential, will continue making efforts to facilitate the solution of problems facing Afghanistan and make contribution its economic reconstruction.  

“We are satisfied with the policy of the Republic of Tajikistan and President Emomali Rahmon regarding cooperation and achievement of peace and stability as well as progress in Afghanistan,” Khalilzad was cited by Khovar news agency as saying after a meeting with President Rahmon.  

According to him, a peaceful Afghanistan is a bridge between Central and South Asia.  

The U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation (SRAR) leads a U.S. government-wide effort to bring an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.  

Zalmay Mamozy Khalilzad (born March 22, 1951) is an Afghan-American diplomat, who has served as the Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation at the State Department since September 2018. Previously, he served as a counselor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the president of Gryphon Partners and Khalilzad Associates, an international business consulting firm, based in Washington, D.C.  He was the United States Ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush and, briefly, President Barack Obama.
