Somon Mahmadbekov has won bronze for Tajikistan at the IJF World Championships in Abu Dhabi, defeating Georgian athlete Dimitri Gochilaidze In the fight for third place in -81kg category

On his way to the quarterfinal, Somon defeated athletes from France, the Netherlands, Egypt and Georgia.

In the quarterfinal, Somon lost to Georgian athlete Tato Grigalashvili and continued to fight for the bronze medal in the repechage round.

By the way, Tato Grigalashvili won gold in -81kg category at the IJF World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

In the fight for the third place, Somon defeated another Georgian judoka Dimitri Gochilaidze and won the bronze medal.

Thus, Somon Mahmadbekov repeated the result 17 years ago.  Tajik known judoka Rasoul Boqiyev won bronze for Tajikistan at the IJF World Championships in Brazil back in 2007.  Before the current competition, Boqiyev’s bronze had been considered Tajikistan's only medal at the IJF World Championships.
