The People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT) has nominated 28 candidates for election to the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) from a single nationwide constituency.

The state-run news agency Khovar says most are young, with only two or three being experienced party members.

According to Khovar, the candidates include: 2 from the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO); 9 from Khatlon Province; 6 from Sughd Province; 6 from Districts Subordinate to the Center (RRP); and f from Dushanbe.

The group consists of 11 women and 17 men, representing various professions: 5 lawyers; 8 economists; 5 teachers; 3 literary scholars; as well as a historian, technologist, engineer, agronomist, and customs specialist,

Among the current MPs, only Saodatsho Matrobiyon has been re-nominated. Among high-ranking officials, only Shermuhammad Shohiyon, Chairman of the Supreme Court, is on the list.

Other nominees include local party leaders, teachers, and officials.

The PDPT is currently the only party to have announced its candidates for the March elections.  Its candidates were selected on December 18 at a party congress where President Emomali Rahmon was re-elected as party leader.

The Democratic Party of Tajikistan (DPT) and the Agrarian Party of Tajikistan (APT) reportedly plan to announce their candidates in upcoming congresses.

The elections to the Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) will take place on March 2, 2025.

The 63 members of the Majlisi Namoyandagon are elected by two methods: 41 members are elected in single-member constituencies using the two-round system, whilst 22 seats are elected by proportional representation in a single nationwide constituency, with an electoral threshold of 5%.  Voters cast a single ballot for a candidate in their single-member constituency, with the total votes received across all constituencies used to determine the proportional seats.  In each constituency, voter turnout is required to be at least 50% for the election to be declared valid.
