Avalanche hits GBAO’s Shugnan district; avalanche warning in effect until January 5

An avalanche occurred on January 3 at 5:40 am in the Suchon jamoat (community) of Shugnan district in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), Tajikistan’s Emergencies Committee reports.

According to the Emergencies Committee, no casualties or damage were reported.  

The road was blocked by snow, and clearance operations are underway.  Road service equipment from the Ministry of Transport has been deployed in the Shugnan district to address the situation.

 

Avalanche warning

The Emergencies Committee warns that the risk of avalanches, landslides, and rockfalls will persist in foothill and mountainous areas, particularly along the Dushanbe-Chanak highway, in Sughd province, and the western parts of GBAO, until January 5.

Residents are advised to limit travel in mountainous areas unless absolutely necessary during this period.  The public is also urged to refrain from agricultural activities, livestock grazing, firewood collection, and hunting in mountainous areas. CES emphasizes the importance of adhering to fire safety regulations when using heaters and stoves.
