The Ministry of Transport of Kyrgyzstan has proposed a project aimed at establishing control over freight transport at five border checkpoints with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
According to reports from Kyrgyz media, two of these five checkpoints are located on the border with Tajikistan. Specifically, the Qairagach checkpoint, which connects the Sughd region of Tajikistan with Batken in Kyrgyzstan, and the Bor-Dobo checkpoint, which lies along the highway between Khorugh in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) of Tajikistan and Osh in Kyrgyzstan.
The Kyrgyz Ministry of Transport has stated that currently, vehicles from other countries pass through these border crossings without the necessary authorization for entry or transit through Kyrgyzstan.
The source reported that foreign freight vehicles must have the appropriate permits to enter Kyrgyz territory or transit through it. From now on, entry into the country will be prohibited at these checkpoints if these requirements are not met.
When contacted by Asia-Plus regarding this matter, the Tajik Ministry of Transport stated that they had not yet received any official information on the issue.
"As matters related to the border with the Kyrgyz Republic are currently under review by the relevant authorities of both sides, the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan has not received any official information on this issue," a representative of the ministry said.
Officials added that further details would be available after a comprehensive review of border-related issues.
It is worth noting that the Tajik-Kyrgyz border was completely closed following the recent conflicts in 2021 and 2022.
At the time, Kyrgyzstan unilaterally closed the border, stating that it would remain shut until the border dispute was resolved. After prolonged negotiations, the delegations of both countries announced on February 21 of this year that they had signed a final agreement on border demarcation. The agreement now awaits approval by the parliaments and the signatures of the presidents of both countries.
