Despite the fact that the government of Afghanistan remains unrecognized by most countries around the world, Kabul has successfully developed economic cooperation with its neighbors and countries of the Islamic world, Russian media reports say, citing the Afghan Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

It is noted that in 2024, Afghanistan exported and imported goods worth around $13 billion.

The main destinations for Afghan exports are Pakistan, India, the UAE, Uzbekistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Turkey, Iraq, and Tajikistan.

The Afghan Ministry of Industry and Commerce reportedly emphasized that the bulk of the country’s exports consist of agricultural products such as figs, cotton, and raisins.  However, supplies of carpets, lead, and precious and semi-precious stones increased last year.

As for Afghanistan’s imports, they mostly consist of fuel, liquefied gas, oil, auto parts, medicines, equipment, medical goods, wheat flour, and rice.

Meanwhile, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan last year valued at about US$105 million.  This reportedly consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Afghanistan estimated at US$98 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Afghanistan worth US$7 million.

Compared to 2023, the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Afghanistan last year increased by 6.8 percent.

The main product supplied by Tajikistan to Afghanistan remains electricity, which accounted for about 67% of a two-way trade turnover between the two countries.  According to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of Tajikistan (MoEWR), Tajikistan supplied 1,530,400, 000 kWh of electricity worth about US$70 million to Afghanistan last year.

Additionally, some construction materials, primarily cement, and food products were supplied to the neighboring country in relatively smaller volumes.

In 2024, the share of Tajik-Afghan trade in Tajikistan's total foreign trade turnover was only 1.2 percent.

It is worth noting that Tajikistan's foreign trade turnover last year exceeded US$8.9 billion.
