Kyrgyzstan's State Committee for National Security (GKNB) announced on Wednesday that it had thwarted a coup attempt by a group aiming to seize power violently and destabilize the socio-political situation through mass riots.

Kaktus.media, citing a statement from the security services, reports that since the beginning of 2025, a group of individuals planning such an act under the guidance of “ideological inspirers” has been under development.  The GKNB does not specify who exactly these individuals are.

Among the planned provocations was the filming of a fake video in which a “beaten, half-naked Kyrgyz woman” allegedly asks for help after being assaulted by foreigners.  The GKNB notes that the purpose of this video was to provoke public outrage and patriotic anger among citizens, as well as to incite interethnic unrest similar to what occurred in May 2024 in Bishkek.

According to the security services, after the video was spread, armed combat groups, pre-prepared and armed with firearms, planned to stage fights and riots in areas where foreigners live and work.

"All of these actions were meant to discredit government authorities and provoke public dissatisfaction, creating conditions for large-scale protest actions funded by so-called opposition forces," said the GKNB.

The committee stated that these actions were being organized from abroad.  Efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest all those involved.  The members of the group who operated within Kyrgyzstan have been detained. One of the suspected organizers is currently abroad—preliminary reports suggest he is in the United Arab Emirates.

So far, the leaders of two regional public organizations have been arrested, a total of 15 people.  The Intergovernmental TV and Radio Corporation (ITRC MIR) reports that to destabilize the situation, the participants had selected around a thousand young people.  During searches of homes and an office, documents confirming the preparation for the riots were found.

According to the GKNB, the coup was planned to take place after the parliamentary elections, scheduled for November 28 in Kyrgyzstan.

It is worth remembering that in 2024, the country's special services reported preventing at least two attempts to overthrow the government.
