A tragic incident in a private kindergarten in the Tajik capital has left a two-year-old boy dead, prompting public outrage and calls for stricter oversight of preschool institutions.

The Dushanbe Police Directorate says the incident occurred on May 19 in the “Savolu Javob” kindergarten.  The child reportedly suffocated after becoming entangled in the bars of a bunk bed during nap time.

Authorities say the teacher responsible had left the children unattended at the time of the incident.  She was not present in the sleeping area when the tragedy occurred.

The prosecutor’s office and police station in Dushanbe’s Sino district have detained a 29-year-old employee of the kindergarten, accusing her of negligence.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against her under Article 175 of Tajikistan’s Criminal Code, which covers the improper fulfillment of duties to ensure the life and health of a minor.  An investigation is under way.

If convicted, the teacher could face up to five years in prison.

News of the child’s death has sparked widespread concern among parents, especially on social media and in messaging app groups.  Many are demanding tighter regulation of private kindergartens and greater accountability for staff.

Questions are being raised about the licensing and supervision of such institutions: How are these kindergartens regulated?  Do they undergo inspections?  Are staff properly trained and certified?  And who ultimately bears responsibility for child safety?

This case has reignited debate over the state of early childhood education in Tajikistan, particularly in the growing private sector. The public is calling for a transparent investigation and comprehensive reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
