A young married couple in Tajikistan’s Rasht (Rasht Valley in eastern Tajikistan) district has died from carbon monoxide poisoning, Radio Liberty’s Tajik Service, known locally as Radio Ozodi, reports, citing a local government source.

The accident reportedly occurred overnight between December 5 and 6 in the village of Kulobai, located in the Qalai Surkh jamoat.

The source reported that the couple had been married for only two months. The husband was 25 years old, and the wife was 18. As temperatures dropped sharply that night, they reportedly used coal to heat their home.

On the morning of December 6, the groom’s relatives entered the house and found the couple unconscious. They were rushed to the hospital but died on the way.

So far, no official statement has been made by authorities, including the Committee of Emergency Situations of Tajikistan.

Due to seasonal electricity shortages in Tajikistan, especially during the fall and winter months, many residents rely on coal for heating. Every year, the country reports cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, some involving entire families.

In one such accident in February 2024, six members of a single family died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Dushanbe.
