DUSHANBE, October 29, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Parliamentarians have endorsed regulations on establishment of the free economic zones (FEZ) in Tajikistan – FEZ Sughd in the territory of the city of Khujand, Sughd province and FEZ Panj in the territory of Khatlon’s Qumsangir district.

A regular sitting of the fifth session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) of the third convocation, presided over by its head, Saydullo Khairulloyev, was held on October 29.

Presenting the draft regulations, Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister, Amonullo Ashour, noted that the document had been worked out by the government for the purpose of developing the country’s industrial sector, attracting foreign investments and creating new jobs.

“The FEZ Sughd will be located in the southwest part of the city of Khujand,” said Ashour, “The FEZ Sughd will be established on an area of 320 hectares for the period of 25 years.”  The FEZ Sughd will be the productive-innovative zone and emphasis will be made on development of new productive capacities and attraction of innovative technologies, according to him.

As far as the FEZ Panj is concerned, it will be established on an area of 400 hectares in Khatlon’s Qumsangir district.  “The FEZ Panj will be the productive-commercial zone,” Ashour said, noting that the FEZ Panj will also be established for the period of 25 years.

He noted that under the country’s law on the free economic zones, all enterprises based in FEZs would be exempted from all types of taxes except the social tax.

Tajikistan adopted the law on fee economic zones on May 17, 2004.
