DUSHANBE, August 16, 2013, Asia-Plus – On Friday August 16, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), who arrived in Dushanbe to participate in the upcoming High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, the sides discussed cooperation between Tajikistan and UNDP.

Ms. Grynspan reportedly noted that Tajikistan had been chosen as pilot country for the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative.

Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) is a global initiative led by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon to achieve universal energy access, improve energy efficiency, and increase the use of renewable energy. It was launched to coincide with the designation of 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All by the UN General Assembly in December 2010.

President Rahmon noted that achievement of sustainable development goals required fruitful cooperation with international partners, including the United Nations agencies.

He highly appraised the level of cooperation of Tajikistan with the UN agencies, including UNDP, and expressed confidence that cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations agencies would expand in the future as well.

Ms. Rebeca Grynspan was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to the position of UN Under-Secretary-General and the United Nations Development Programme Associate Administrator on February 1, 2010.  At the UN and prior to her current appointment, Ms. Grynspan served as Assistant-Secretary-General and Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the United Nations Development Programme from 2006 to 2010.  She was the Vice President of Costa Rica from 1994 to 1998.
