DUSHANBE, August 19, 2013, Asia-Plus – Tajik capital is hosting an international gender forum today.

According to press release issued by TajWSS (Tajikistan Water Supply and Sanitation Project), the Gender Forum entitled “Empowerment of Women: Foundation for Successful Transnational Water Cooperation” is taking place at the Kokhi Somon State Complex in Dushanbe.

Initiated by the Government of Tajikistan and organized in partnership with OXFAM Tajikistan, Women for Water Partnership, UN Women and UNDP, the forum is being held within the framework of the High-Level International Conference on Water Cooperation that will take place in Dushanbe from August 20-21.

More than 150 active women from different parts of the world are expected to participate in the Dushanbe Gender Forum.

The main objective of the Gender Forum is reportedly to address challenges and gaps, mechanisms and tools for effective water cooperation including capacity building for a participatory and inclusive approach involving women.

The agenda of the forum includes sessions on the women engagement in water cooperation from the governance and good practices perspectives.  An example cases from Nigeria, Armenia, Uganda and Sri Lanka describing roles of women in water cooperation and benefits for development, economics and environment will be presented in the course of the forum.  Parallel working sessions on the basis of reality cases of Liberia, Bulgaria and Tajikistan will be held at the second part of the forum.

TajWSS Project is funded by the Government of Switzerland through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and implemented by OXFAM in Tajikistan in partnership with the Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Resources and UNDP.
