DUSHANBE, December 8, 2013, Asia-Plus – Islamic Revival Party (IRP) activist Qiyomiddin Avazov has been elected to head the IRP’s organization for Dushanbe.

IRP’s organization for Dushanbe held the 8th conference to hear reports and elect new officials on December 6.

According to IRP’s headquarters in Dushanbe, Qiyomiddin Avazov was elected the head of the IRP organization for Dushanbe, replacing Muhammadjon Nuri, the eldest son of Sayid Abdulloh Nuri, one of the founders of the Islamic Revival Party.

Besides, Mustafo Hojizoda was elected to head the organization’s inspection commission.

Sayid Abdulloh Nuri (March 15, 1947 – August 9, 2006) led the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan from 1993 until he died of cancer in late 2006.  During the Tajik civil war (1992 – 1997) he led the United Tajik Opposition (UTO).  Nuri and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon ended the civil war by signing the Tajik National Peace Accord in 1997.

In 1974, Sayid Abdulloh Nuri founded Nahzat-i Islomi, an Islamic education organization.  Soviet militsiya (police) arrested him in 1986 for spreading “religious propaganda,” imprisoning him until 1988.

Founded in October 1990, the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan was registered on December 4, 1991.  It was banned by the Supreme Court in June 1993 and legalized in August 1999.  Its official newspaper is

Najot

(Salvation).  According to some sources, IRP now has more than 40,000 members.  It won two seats in the 2010 parliamentary elections.  The Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan is the only Islamic party registered in CIS Central Asia.  Current chairman of the IRP is Muhiddin Kabiri.
