DUSHANBE, March 11, 2014, Asia-Plus – On the sidelines of the event dedicated to the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation (IYWC), Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Aslov has held a number of bilateral talks in New York, according to the Tajik MFA information department.
On March 10, Aslov met with Mr. Wu Hongbo, the United Nations Undersecretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs.
The two reportedly exchanged views on cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations in providing sustainable development and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Mr. Wu Hongbo was appointed United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs on 1 August 2012. A career diplomat, Mr. Wu had been serving, since 2009, as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Federal Republic of Germany. His prior diplomatic postings also included New Zealand, and the Philippines where he served as China’s Ambassador.
On the same day, Tajik foreign minister met with Mr. Jeffrey D. Feltman, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.
The two discussed issues related to providing security in the Central Asian region, the situation in Afghanistan, etc.
As head of the United Nations Department of Political Affairs Feltman oversees the UN”s diplomatic efforts to prevent and mitigate conflict around the globe. Before joining the United Nations, Feltman served as US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs from August 2009 to June 2012 with the rank of Career Minister. He was previously the United States Ambassador to Lebanon from July 2004 to January 2008.
