CSTO to form unified group of forces in Central Asia

DUSHANBE, July 31, 2008, Asia-Plus – Member nations of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) will deploy the Unified Group of Forces of Central Asian Region of Collective Security, the CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha announced on July 29, according to Izvestiya.ru.  

According to him, this group is dedicated to be military-political constraint with regard for the current uneasy situation in Afghanistan. 

According to Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrey Denisov, “the Organization is a key instrument to maintain stability and provide security within the CIS area.”

            The meeting that will be held in Russia in early September is scheduled to consider a broad range of issues related to improvement of the CSTO military component. 

The meeting will also discuss a progress of implementation of the plan of the coalition military construction of the Organization for the period until 2010 as well as deployment of the Unified Group of Forces of Central Asian Region of Collective Security and operational training of management bodies and armed forces of the CSTO.  

The Collective Security Treaty Organization members are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
