DUSHANBE, June 10, 2014, Asia-Plus – Tajik-Latvian negotiations that were held in Dushanbe today resulted in signing of a number of cooperation documents.
Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Latvian President Andris Bērziņš signed a joint statement.
Besides, a government-to-government agreement on cooperation in combating terrorism, organized crime and drug trafficking, a government-to-government agreement on cooperation in the fields of education and science, a government-to-government agreement on cooperation in the field of tourism, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the Main Border Guard Directorate of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan and the State Border Guard of Latvia were signed in the presence of the two presidents.
In a statement to the press, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon noted that the negotiations were a logical result of mutual interest of the sides in strengthening of friendship between the two countries and expansion of Tajik-Latvian cooperation.
“We discussed participation of Latvian business structures in implementation of economic development projects in Tajikistan,” President Rahmon said, outlining sectors like energy, tourism, pharmaceutics, agriculture, and minerals, as areas of which could drive the bilateral trade between Tajikistan and Latvia.
“The documents that were signed will pave the way for further expansion of bilateral partnership between our countries,” Tajik leader noted.
We will recall that Latvian President Andris Bērziņš arrived in Tajikistan on an official visit in the evening of June 9.
The diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Latvia were established on May 11, 1994.
According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Latvia last year valued at US$35.0045 million. This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Latvia estimated at US$3.9247 million and Tajikistan’s imports from Latvia worth US$31.0798 million.
