DUSHANBE, October 20, 2015, Asia-Plus – A new irrigation system covering 12,000 hectares of dry-farming lands and pastures has been constructed in the Ghonchi district, Sughd province.

According to the Tajik president’s official website, an official opening of the system that took place yesterday was attended by President Emomali Rahmon.

Projected by the Ste Design Institute “Tajikgiprovodkhoz,” the irrigation system covers 12,000 hectares of dry-farming lands and pastures in Rostrovut, Mujun, Yakhtan and Gazantarak jamoats as well as the settlement of Ghonchi.

The website says 110,000 residents of the district will have access to safe drinking water. 

The first line of the new irrigation system will be introduced into operation in 2016 and 5,800 hectares of dry-farming lands and pastures will be provided with water next year. 

Implementation of the project will create 12,000 new jobs.
