Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday received the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, according to the Tajik president’s official website.
The two sides reportedly discussed state and prospects of further expansion of cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations.
President Rahmon, in particular, noted that cooperation with the United Nation was important for strengthening of Tajikistan’s statehood, promotion of economic reforms in Tajikistan and sustainable development of the country.
Rahmon and Guterres discussed cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations on development of Tajikistan’s national development strategy for the period to 2030.
Tajik leader underlined the significance of cooperation with the United Nations in implementing energy, transportation, agrarian and infrastructure development projects.
The two also exchanged views on issues related to establishing peace and accord in Afghanistan.
The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres today will also attend a conference on the Sustainable Development Goals in Dushanbe.
Today, twenty-three UN agencies, programs and specialized projects are active in Tajikistan.
Recall, the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres started tour of Central Asia’s nations on June 8 and Kazakhstan was the first leg of his tour of Central Asia. In Astana, Kazakhstan, the Secretary-General attended the celebrations in honor of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Heads of State Council. On June 9, he met with President Nursultan Nazarbayev and addressed the plenary session of the SCO summit.
On Saturday, 10 June, the UN Secretary-General was in Samarqand, Uzbekistan, where he opened a National Forum on the Sustainable Development Goals and held talks with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
Then on Sunday, 11 June, the UN Secretary-General was in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to meet with President Almazbek Atambayev, and then on to Osh, where he will attend a commemoration of the June 2010 events.
On June 13, the UN Secretary-General will arrive in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where he will meet with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In the afternoon, he will participate in a high-level UN Central-Asian dialogue on implementing the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia. The UN Secretary-General will then be making his way back to New York.
