People in Tajikistan restricted to as many as two prepaid SIM cards of the same company

Date:

Tajikistan has imposed limits on the ownership of prepaid SIM cards of the same company for individuals.  Individuals are now limited to two prepaid SIM cards of the same company.

The Interior Ministry, the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) and the Communications Service under the Government of Tajikistan have adopted a joint resolution imposing limits on the ownership of prepaid SIM cards for Individuals.  Individuals are now limited to two prepaid SIM cards of the same company.

If an individual had earlier bought more than two SIM cards of the same company, the extra SIM cards will be blocked.

All cellular mobile operators are asked to check the number of SIM cards before selling new SIM cards to customers and that new SIM cards should not be sold to anyone already having to SIM cards.

Umarjon Emomali, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry, says restrictions aim to prevent the use of cards in committing crimes in the country.  “Such ‘impersonal’ cards are frequently used for committing crimes,” Emomali said.

The May 2 joint resolution was made public on June 15.
