Top level talks between Tajikistan and Pakistan that took place in Dushanbe on July 5 have resulted in signing of a number of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements, according to the Tajik president’s official website.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif signed a joint declaration entitled “Road towards Strategic Partnership for Regional Solidarity.”

Besides, the Tajik Agricultural University named after Shirinsho Shotemour and Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation on training of personnel.

The Governments of Tajikistan and Pakistan reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on trade cooperation.       

Up to this date, Tajikistan and Pakistan have reportedly signed more than 50 bilateral documents.  

According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Pakistan last year valued at little more than 55 million U.S. dollars.  This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Pakistan estimated at more than 30 million U.S. dollars and Tajikistan’s imports from Pakistan worth some 25 million U.S. dollars.  Compared to 2015, the two-way trade between Tajikistan and Pakistan last year decreased by 14 percent.  

Tajikistan and Pakistan enjoy close and cooperative relations.  These ties are characterized by mutual respect, shared perceptions and common desire to promote peace, stability and development in the region.  The two countries also share common views on major regional and international issues and cooperate closely in the regional and multilateral forums.

Pakistan was among the first countries that recognized the independence of Tajikistan, established diplomatic relations and opened a resident mission in Dushanbe.
