From 2015 to June 30, 2017, Tajikistan completely paid off its debts to Iran, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Secretariat.

As of July 1, 2016, Tajikistan reportedly owed 1.56 million U.S. dollars to the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI).

As far as Tajikistan’s debts to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are concerned, Tajikistan reportedly paid off them in 2015.

Tajikistan’s external debt now amounts to 2.3034 billion U.S. dollars.

China reportedly remains Tajikistan’s largest creditor; China accounts for more than 52 percent of Tajikistan’s external debt – 1.2174 billion U.S. dollars.

Tajikistan also owes 44.9 million U.S. dollars to the Saudi Fund for Development, 38.7 million somoni to the Kuwaiti Fund and 24 million U.S. dollars to the Government of France.

Tajikistan’s debts on bilateral basis now reportedly amount to 1.3805 billion U.S. dollars.

International financial institutions are also among Tajikistan’s large creditors.  Tajikistan now owes 299.9 million U.S. dollars to the World Bank Group, 227.5 million U.S. dollars to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), 111.9 million U.S. dollars to the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and 101.1 million U.S. dollars to the International Monetary Fund (IMF),the Secretariat said.

It is worth noting that Tajikistan now also owes 505.3 million somoni to the Sangtuda-2 hydroelectric power plant (HPP), which was built with help of Iranian specialists.

The power plant has been built by Iranian company Sangab.  The turnkey contractor was International Farab Co.  The project was consulted by Mahab Ghods Engineering Company and the subcontractor was Omran Maroon Engineers Company.

Tajik and Iranian presidents unveiled the second generating unit at the Iranian-funded Sangtuda-2 HPP on September 10, 2014.  Iran, which has put some 180 million U.S. dollars into the construction of the hydropower station, will operate it the first 14 ½ years and then transfer control to Tajikistan, whose contribution to the construction costs amounted to around 40 million U.S. dollars.

IRNA reports that the head of Barqi Tojik (Tajikistan’s national integrated power company), Mirzo Ismoilzoda, announced on August 4 that Tajikistan is ready to pay off its US$62 million dollar debt to Iranian Sangtuda-2 power plant.
