On August 23 at the monument to Ismoil Somoni in the center of Dushanbe, police officers approached to him and in broken Russian said that he must first pay them money, and then take photos of the monument. "I asked them why they extort money in broad daylight, which they answered – you Americans have money – they do not peck at the money", – scientist-traveler said to radio correspondent on August 25.
Policemen lagged behind him and allowed to photograph the monument only after the scientist told them that he was not an American, but a citizen of Germany.
