British Ambassador to Tajikistan, Mr. Hugh Philpott, yesterday released a letter to express his opinion on Khairullo Mirsadiov’s case
“Recognizing that the details of the case against Mr. Khairullo Mirsaidov are the prerogative of the Court and other competent authorities, I would like to express my opinion on this matter.
“Having read Mr. Mirsaidov's open letter to the President of the country in November, where he publicly urged the Head of State to pay attention to illegal, corruptive actions of some of the members of the civil service, I was picturing a clear example of how society can develop due to actions of active citizens like him and opportunity for citizens to contribute to the improvement of the legal processes and the development of a democratic society.
“This gives hope for the results of the many years of efforts of the Government of Tajikistan in the struggle to eradicate corruption in the country and inspired the international community to increase cooperation and continue to support the Government in this vital work.
“The fight against corruption is a very complicated and long process and without the joint efforts of the State bodies and the public, it is impossible to get results. We must clearly understand that corruption will always win if the participants of corrupt actions, have the opportunity to resist, protect their own selfish interests and create the conditions under which it seems that the fight against corruption is dangerous. If they are allowed to do this, they will always go unpunished.
“On August 15, the Sughd regional court will consider the appeal of Mr Mirsaidov against his 12 year sentence. Positive outcome of this case in Mr Mirsaidov’s favor will demonstrate the determination of the Government of Tajikistan in an ruthless fight against corruption and in all its forms. There may not be a political motivation to all of this, but I urge the Government of Tajikistan and other involved parties to understand that it has became a consider politically important for strengthening the fight against corruption for the sake of building a democratic society and improving the conditions for economic growth that Tajikistan is trying to develop in such complex for country conditions.
“Such positive steps will always find a positive response from the people, and will strengthen their confidence in the authorities, as well as provide an impetus for building up the support of the world community for the development and prosperity of Tajikistan.”
