Tajikistan abolishes transit fees for Uzbek vehicles passing through Tajik territory

Date:

Tajikistan has abolished transit fees for Uzbek vehicles passing through Tajik territory, according to the Customs Service under the Government of Tajikistan.

An appropriate government’s regulation on this subject was signed by President Emomali Rahmon, who is also the Head of the Government of Tajikistan, on august 8 this year.

Before that, in accordance with Tajik government’s regulation adopted in November 2007, Uzbek vehicles passing through Tajik territory had paid a lump-sum transit fee equivalent to 180.00 U.S. dollars.

Recall, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan reopened bus links connecting their cities and towns in May this year after the 26-year interruption.

The first shuttle bus with passengers on board arrived in the Tajik northern city of Khujand from the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, on May 15.

The total length of the road from Khujand to Tashkent is 174 kilometers and a ticket for this route costs 50.00 somoni.

Five new bus links connecting towns and cities of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan were launched in July this year.

In all, twelve regular bus routes are expected to be launched to the Uzbek cities of Tashkent, Samarqand Bukhara, Ferghana, Denau, Kokand, Andijan and Termez.

An agreement on reopening bus links between the large cities of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan was signed in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, in April this year.  The document was inked by senior representatives of the Ministry of Transport of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan’s Auto Transport Agency.

This has reportedly become possible due to a government-to-government agreement between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan on international highway service that was signed in Dushanbe on March 9 during Uzbek president’s state visit to Tajikistan.
